    Thermochromism of Model Organic Aerosol Matter

    Laboratory experiments show that the optical absorptivity of model organic matter is not an intrinsic property, but a strong function of relative humidity, temperature, and insolation. Suites of representative polyfunctional C_(x)H_(y)O_(z) oligomers in water develop intense visible absorptions upon addition of inert electrolytes. The resulting mixtures reach mass absorption cross sections σ(532 nm) ~ 0.1 m^(2)/gC in a few hours, absorb up to 9 times more solar radiation than the starting material, can be half-bleached by noon sunlight in ~ 1 h, and can be repeatedly recycled without carbon loss. Visible absorptions red-shift and evolve increasingly faster in subsequent thermal aging cycles. Thermochromism and its strong direct dependences on ionic strength and temperature are ascribed to the dehydration of >CH−C(OH)C═C< unsaturations by a polar E1 mechanism, and bleaching to photoinduced retrohydration. These transformations are deemed to underlie the daily cycles of aerosol absorption observed in the field, and may introduce a key feedback in the earth’s radiative balance

    Mycosphaerella leaf spots and nematodes threaten banana cultivation worldwide. The Mycosphaerella disease complex involves three related ascomycetous fungi: Mycosphaerella fijiensis, M. musicola and M. eumusae. The exact distribution of these three species and their disease epidemiology remain unclear, since their symptoms and life cycles are rather similar. Diagnosing these diseases and the respective causal agents is based on the presence of host symptoms and fungal fruiting structures, but is time consuming and not conducive to preventive management. In the present study, we developed rapid and robust species-specific diagnostic tools to detect and quantify M. fijiensis, M. musicola and M. eumusae. Conventional species-specific PCR primers were developed based on the actin gene that detected as little as 100, 1 and 10 pg/µl DNA from, respectively, M. fijiensis, M. musicola and M. eumusae. Furthermore, TaqMan real-time quantitative PCR assays that were developed based on the ß-tubulin gene detected quantities as low as 1 pg/µl DNA of each species from pure cultures and 1.6 pg/µl DNA/mg of M. fijiensis from dry leaf tissue. The efficacy of the tests was validated using naturally infected banana leaves.     Photolysis of pyruvic acid in ice: Possible relevance to CO and CO_2 ice core record anomalies

    The abnormal spikes detected in some CO and CO_2 polar ice core records indicate persistent chemical activity in glacial ice. Since CO and CO_2 spikes are correlated, and their amplitudes scale with reported CO/CO_2 yields for the photolysis of dissolved natural organic matter, a common photochemical source is implicated. Given that sufficient actinic radiation is constantly generated throughout ice by cosmic muons (Colussi and Hoffmann, 2003), it remains to be shown that the photolyses of typical organic contaminants proceed by similar mechanisms in water and ice. Here we report that the photodecarboxylation of pyruvic acid (PA, an ubiquitous ice contaminant) indeed leads to the same products nearly as efficiently in both media. CO_2 is promptly released from frozen PA/H_2O films upon illumination and continues to evolve after photolysis. By analogy with our studies in water (Guzmán et al., 2006b), we infer that ^3PA* reacts with PA in ice producing CH_3C(O)C(O)O· and (CH_3C•(OH)C(O)OH) radicals. The barrierless decarboxylation, CH3C(O)C(O)O· → CH_3C(O)· + CO_2, accounts for prompt CO_2 emissions down to ∼140 K. Bimolecular radical reactions subsequently ensue in fluid molecular environments, both in water and ice, leading to metastable intermediates that decarboxylate immediately in water, but protractedly in ice. The overall quantum yield of CO_2 production in the λ ~313 nm photolysis of PA in ice at 250 K is ∼60% of that in water at 293 K. The in situ photolysis of natural organic matter is, therefore, a plausible explanation of CO and CO_2 ice core record anomalies

    Towards a FPGA-controlled deep phase modulation interferometer

    Deep phase modulation interferometry was proposed as a method to enhance homodyne interferometers to work over many fringes. In this scheme, a sinusoidal phase modulation is applied in one arm while the demodulation takes place as a post-processing step. In this contribution we report on the development to implement this scheme in a fiber coupled interferometer controlled by means of a FPGA, which includes a LEON3 soft-core processor. The latter acts as a CPU and executes a custom made application to communicate with a host PC. In contrast to usual FPGA-based designs, this implementation allows a real-time fine tuning of the parameters involved in the setup, from the control to the post-processing parameters.Comment: Proceedings of the X LISA Symposium, Gainesville, May 18-23, 201

    EVALUACIÓN COMPARADA DE LA SOSTENIBILIDAD AGRARIA EN EL OLIVAR ECOLÓGICO Y CONVENCIONAL

    The objective of this study is to assess agrarian sustainability from an agro-ecological perspective, taking into account economic, social and environmental aspects. For this, we comparatively evaluate organic and conventional olive oil production in the Los Pedroches region (Córdoba, Spain), using the MESMIS methodology. We are used 17 sustainability indicators; 13 of they have highest values in organic management. The final data show that techniques and technologies used in organic management are better than conventional one, from a global sustainable approach. As a consequence, the organic management of the olive groves and the sale of organic olive oil can be a stimulus to farmers to increase their profits and to preserve the natural resources. The results obtained permit to shed light on certain elements necessary to the design of rural development policies linked to this sector; especially in those areas with a high importance in this crop.El objetivo del presente trabajo es evaluar la sostenibilidad agraria desde una perspectiva agroecológica, teniendo en cuenta aspectos económicos, sociales y ambientales. Para ello, evaluamos comparativamente la producción de aceite de oliva ecológica y convencional en la comarca de Los Pedroches (Córdoba, España), empleando la metodología del MESMIS. Se han utilizado 17 indicadores de sostenibilidad, obteniéndose en 13 de ellos valores mayores en el olivar ecológico. Esta evaluación muestra que las diferentes labores realizadas y tecnologías aplicadas en el cultivo ecológico y convencional del olivar, hacen que el primero presente un nivel más alto de sostenibilidad global. Así, el cultivo ecológico del olivar y la venta de aceite ecológica puede ser un estímulo para incrementar los benefi cios económicos de los olivicultores, a la vez que se preservan los recursos naturales. Los resultados obtenidos permiten poner de manifi esto algunos aspectos relevantes a la hora de diseñar políticas de desarrollo rural relacionadas con este sector; especialmente en aquellas zonas con una importante presencia de este cultivo

    Fission half-lives of super-heavy nuclei in a microscopic approach

    A systematic study of 160 heavy and super-heavy nuclei is performed in the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach with the finite range and density dependent Gogny force with the D1S parameter set. We show calculations in several approximations: with axially symmetric and reflexion symmetric wave functions, with axially symmetric and non-reflexion symmetric wave functions and finally some representative examples with triaxial wave functions are also discussed. Relevant properties of the ground state and along the fission path are thoroughly analyzed. Fission barriers, Qα_\alpha-factors and lifetimes with respect to fission and α\alpha-decay as well as other observables are discussed. Larger configuration spaces and more general HFB wave functions as compared to previous studies provide a very good agreement with the experimental data.Comment: 26 pages, 15 figure

    The Minimum-Uncertainty Squeezed States for for Atoms and Photons in a Cavity

    We describe a six-parameter family of the minimum-uncertainty squeezed states for the harmonic oscillator in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. They are derived by the action of corresponding maximal kinematical invariance group on the standard ground state solution. We show that the product of the variances attains the required minimum value 1/4 only at the instances that one variance is a minimum and the other is a maximum, when the squeezing of one of the variances occurs. The generalized coherent states are explicitly constructed and their Wigner function is studied. The overlap coefficients between the squeezed, or generalized harmonic, and the Fock states are explicitly evaluated in terms of hypergeometric functions. The corresponding photons statistics are discussed and some applications to quantum optics, cavity quantum electrodynamics, and superfocusing in channeling scattering are mentioned.
